An increasingly widespread skin concern is the appearance of spots and discolourations.

The cause of hyperpigmentation is to be found in an abnormal stimulation of the melanocytes resulting in an excessive quantity of melanin that accumulates in a limited area instead of being homogeneously distributed.

Melanocytes are dendritic cells that are formed by melanoblasts and live in the basal layer of the epidermis. Dendrites, the extensions from which the melanin emerges, reach the stratum corneum of the epidermis, the most superficial one. When a melanocyte is damaged and melanin production is abnormal, skin discoloration occurs.

Alteration of melanocytes can be caused by several factors:

  • Chronological ageing
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, etc.)
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Medicines (estrogens, antibiotics, cortisone, etc.)
  • Food (allergies and intolerances)

The solution offered by our Laboratories is the Illumina Collection uses a pool of active ingredients that combined treatsĀ  age spots and discolourations.

  • Morus Alba – the White Mulberry contains mulberrosides, able to inhibit tyrosinase and fight free radicals, thus avoiding damage to the melanocytes.
  • Niacinamide – Vitamin PP, or Vitamin B3, prevents the exchange of melanin between melanocytes and keratinocytes to prevent discolourations. Additionally, it acts as a stimulator of the components of the superficial hydro-lipid film, improving the barrier function of our skin.
  • Vitamin C – Ascorbic Acid has many properties, including stimulating epidermal renewal and Collagen fibers production. Thanks to its strong antioxidant action, it inhibits tyrosinase by performing a brightening action on the skin surface.
  • Bearberry – is able to inhibit the enzyme that converts the thyroxine into melanin in order to even out the skin colour and minimise discolourations due to excessive sun exposure, hormonal changes, senility, etc.
