Finally the sun!
Benedetto sole Gli effetti che ha sulla nostra pelle

Summer is just behind the corner and, like every year, new discussions and debates on positive and negative aspects about sun exposure arise.

The sun is a medium-sized star that “floods” the Earth with light, but on top of it our planet is reached by the notorious ultraviolet radiation: UVA and UVB. UVA account for 95% of radiations that reach the surface of the Earth and are, therefore, the most harmful. They can pass through the atmosphere and are always present, even during winter and on cloudy days. Their dangerousness comes from the fact that they hit our skin without giving us pain and they quickly reach the Dermis, triggering the production of free radicals that, in the long run, can damage our skin cells, accelerating the ageing process and favouring skin diseases.
UVB, on the other hand, are not as powerful and mainly hit only the surface of the skin causing erythema and sunburns. Hence, UVB can visibly damage the surface of the skin, while UVA cause damage from deep down the skin, which are not visible in the short run, but dangerous in the long run.

With this introduction we could conclude that the sun is harmful to our skin. However, we must not forget that, thanks to the sun, our body increases the production of vitamin D, which helps the strenghtening of our bones and the relief of pain to our joints. Has it ever happened that a sunny day had a positive effect to your mood?
This happens because during sun exposure our body releases endorphins that improve our mood and increase our energies. The sun also regulates the production of Melatonin, sleep hormone that improves the quality of our sleep.
With the proper precautions, sun exposure can improve the status of some skin diseases such as acne and psoriasis thanks to the stimulation of the skin barrier function and the increase in immune defenses.

To conclude, even if the list could be even longer, an appropriate sun exposure improves our metabolism and keeps the brain functions properly active. Having said so, we can state that the sun is crucial to live a happy and healthy life, but we must take important steps to prevent it becoming too aggressive for our skin. The use of sunscreen creams fights the damage and protects the skin.

We know that there are several SPFs and although all skin types need protection, everyone has different needs. In general, a high SPF product is recommended for all phototypes during the first solar exposures, which does not mean that the skin is tanning less, indeed, the result will be more homogeneous and even, without sunburns and erythema. Also darker skins need to be protected because, even if they do not get burnt, they still suffer the “invisible” and deep damage of the UVA rays.

So enjoy the sun and its benefits by always using a suitable protection for your skin type and remembering that UVA rays also work in the winter. Therefore it is advisable to use a cream with a factor of protection throughout the year to have a face that always looks young and healthy.
